Al-Makura offers scholarship, employment to visually impaired

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has offered scholarship to a visually impaired 26-year-old Justina Sule to study special education at the University of Jos.
Al-Makura, who disclosed this on Thursday in Lafia, also donated a braille machine to aid her study in the university.
He said that Sule, a diploma holder in special education from the University of Jos, had written him a letter requesting for assistance upon her admission for a degree programme at the university.
The governor added that the state government would give automatic employment to the lady upon completion of her education.
“As a matter of policy, this administration has made commitment to automatically employ all disabled persons who obtain degree certificates,” Al-Makura said.
Al-Makura said that the lady would be given vocational job at the newly established special school in the state to keep her busy and earns some money during holidays.
Responding, Sule thanked the governor for the gesture, saying that her dream of becoming a professor was being realised.
She said that four members of her family, including her parents, were blind, adding that the grace of God had kept her hope alive and used the governor to ameliorate her plight.
Sule, who narrated how daunting studying had being during her diploma days, said that the braille machine would go a long way to ease her tasks in the university.
However, she appealed to the state government to render more assistance to other physically challenged persons in the state to make life meaningful for this class of people in the society.
“There are so many physically challenged persons out that if given the necessary assistance, can fulfil their dreams and contribute meaningfully to the society,” she said.
She also advised physically challenged persons in the state not to despair in spite of their condition but strive to give their best, believing that God will come to their aid in due time. (NAN)
