‘Go for the 10th trophy’ — Tinubu charges super Falcons ahead of WAFCON final

President Bola Tinubu has charged the Super Falcons to make history by winning their final clash against hosts Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their journey so far as “awe-inspiring.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, Tinubu praised the Falcons for their unbeaten run in the tournament, highlighting their dominance in the group stage, knockout victories, and near-perfect defensive performance.

“Your performance at this tournament over the past three weeks has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength,” the president said.

“In the pitch and off the pitch, you have demonstrated true sportsmanship.

“I was delighted to see photographs of your visit to the injured Gabriela Salgado of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana following the semi-final match. That simple act of compassion reflects our shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection, which we Africans hold in high regard.”

Tinubu said Nigeria is fully behind the team and confident in their ability to lift a record tenth WAFCON trophy.

“If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions. Unbeaten in the group stages, victorious in the knockout rounds, and conceding only a goal in the semi-finals.

“Apart from this, you have emerged triumphant in all your previous nine finals.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, we are rooting for you and praying for your resounding success tonight, as you strive to achieve the crowning accomplishment of lifting a record tenth continental title.”

To underscore his support, the President dispatched a high-level delegation to Rabat, led by Hannatu Musawa, minister of arts, culture, tourism, and the creative economy.

Other members include Doris Uzoka-Anite, minister of state for finance; Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, minister of women affairs; and Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission.

Tinubu also extended gratitude to the families of the players, coaching staff, Nigerian fans in Morocco, and the country’s diplomatic mission for standing by the team.

“You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you,” he added.

The Super Falcons will face Morocco at 9 pm tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
