As the rescheduled 2015 general elections draw nearer, Global Association of WestAfrican Youths (GLOWAY) has harped on the need for Nigerian to eschew violence so that the nation can have a peaceful and credible elections poll.
The group stated this on Friday in a press statement signed by its President, Baruga Abdullahi Ibrahim and made available to Daily Times in Abuja.
According to the Abdullahi, it will be highly detrimental and suicidal if Nigeria compromises this status quo of the peace and tranquility it enjoys; he stated that Nigerians must vehemently reject and avoid any form of post election unrest to be able to continue to enjoy its leading role across the continent.
“The Nigeria security should either use this opportunity to exonerate itself from the allegations that it was used recently by politicians to intimidate opposition and aid rigging in one of Nigeria’s state, or be ready for prosecution by the ICC, if it becomes partisan in the forthcoming elections, because being partisan is tantamount to instigating violence. We are watching, the attention of the world leaders is also here, it is better they behave professional to avoid being disgrace”.
“We suggest to the Nigeria electoral commission to intensify on their quest for a free, fair and credible poll for the world to see, record has it that anything short of level play ground for candidates at all level during elections may instigate avoidable revolt”.
He further stated that the UN, AU, EU, ECOWAS, Common Wealth and all Foreign and local accredited observers mission to be professional and avoid any form of compromise. “For ECOWAS and AU they must act beyond the capability of mere observers; they must be very courageous to hold the bull by the horn, and void the election if the processes is not convincingly transparent, because we will hold the leadership of ECOWAS and AU responsible if Nigeria elections is not credible and for whatever reason the election is not void”
“As stakeholders, GLOWAY have one of the largest presence of election observers mission in the Nigeria’s forthcoming election, intermittently we will continue to assess the commitment of Nigeria government, Nigeria’s election commission, all Political parties, security agents, all international organization and local observer missions and other stakeholders on the need for free, fair, credible and violence free poll in Nigeria”.
