Global warming: New Umudike Rotary to plant more trees

Mindful of global warming and its negative effects, the newly installed Rotary President, Rtn. Engr. Obuora Okoye has disclosed that his administration will plant more trees to save the environment.

Presenting his inaugural address at Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim auditorium, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, (MOUAU), Abia State, shortly after his installation as the 15th President, Rotary Club Umudike central, district 9142 Nigeria, Rtn. Okoye called on the audience to adopt the habit of tree planting,

adding that, “the club will engage in tree planting exercise in order to increase our trees in future and contribute in reducing global warming”.

He said his administration will ensure that communities in Umudike wears a greener outlook by sensitizing and engaging villagers in cleaning their environment and increase advocacy in market places, churches, commercial surroundings and motor parks in Umudike.

Okoye said the club will raise the awareness on pregnant women and mothers on the need for proper adherence to their antenatal and postnatal services so as to improve the maternal and child health, and will re-echo the benefits of breastfeeding newborns (exclusive breastfeeding) and assist in catering for newborns of the less privileged.

“The club intends to raise the awareness on sustainable ways of preventing and treating diseases. We will go inside communities especially primary schools to continue our earlier efforts in making their environments disease free.

The club will carry out a breast and cervical cancer awareness campaign in various communities in Umudike and environs. There will be health talks and free screening on girls and mothers.

“The club seeks to procure and donate medical equipment, drugs especially routine pregnancy drugs, health testing kits and consumables to various health centres in Umudike and environs”, he stated.

Okoye revealed that Rotary International has signature projects which are always carried out in club level such as polio advocacy and immunization, fellowship and providing support for the less privileged in the society, fellowship and providing resources for the physically challenged or deprived due to life threatening diseases or accidents in the communities.

He said, “Polio is the flagship project of Rotary International and all polio vaccines have been provided free of charge by the Rotary foundation to all polio endemic countries for years now. Rotary International aims to eradicate the polio virus from the face of this wonderful earth in no distant time”.

Earlier in her valedictory speech, the Immediate Past President of the club, Rtn. Chinonyerem Obinwa made it clear that Rotary is all about humanitarian services, improving people’s quality life and promised to assist the Okoye led administration achieve all his dreams for the club.

Interacting with newsmen shortly after the event which saw the MOUAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Otunta, Barr. Chris Owui (Mr. C) of Love FM radio among others honoured by the club, the Chairman, installation committee, PAG Emmanuel Osodeke said the programme afforded the club the opportunity to inform the public of what Rotary is all about and to inaugurate new members.

He advised members of the club to keep on with their charity work and be steadfast in rotary.
