Ghana Refutes Gas Supply Indebtedness to Nigeria

Ghana’s Energy Ministry has refuted the claim that Nigeria cut gas supply to Ghana over its indebtedness to the sum of some $100 million.

This is sequel to the allegation by the New Patriotic Party’s running mate for the 2016 elections, DrMahamudu Bawumia, who recently disclosed during Central University College’s distinguished speaker series a fortnight ago, that the current power crisis in the country is partly due to the government’s failure to settle a $100 million debt it owes Nigeria Gas.

According to GhanaWeb, Nigeria has apparently cut gas supply to Ghana over indebtedness, and explained that if the latest development is true, it means Ghana will lose about 600 megawatts of power from the country’s national electricity grid as most of the thermal plants in the country run on gas.

The Communications Consultant to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Edward Bawa has however denied reports that Nigeria has cut gas supply to Ghana.

Bawa also confirmed this in an interview withMyjoyonline.com that Ghana’s power plants were running on gas supplied from Nigeria.

According to him, a plant at the West African Gas Pipeline Company had developed a fault early this morning and would be repaired within an hour.
