Ganduje laments high cases of malnutrition in Kano

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Gandje has lamented that the lives of about half a million children are threatened by health cases that are related to malnutrition.

The Governor decried the health challenge culminating in the large number of stunt children which is now rampant in the state, describing the situation as disturbing and worrisome.

Ganduje, while launching a dietary diversification project supported by UNICEF said, the affected children are prone to death before age of five.

He affirm that the state Government is committed in the fight against stunting, calling on traditional rulers to join the campaign against the ubiquitous menace of stunt children, which is currently bedevilling the state.

“Locally, we have the required food to address the issue, we only need to sensitize our people especially those in the rural areas on how to use, the available crops and legumes to achieve balance diet.

“Nigeria is one of the four countries in the world, that is faced with the problems of malnutrition and Kano as the most populated state should under this circumstance account for a good number of affected children, as parents we must all of us combine forces to address the problem and ensure we overcome it.” Ganduje stated.

The field officer, UNICEF Katsina office, Zohra Nissi disclosed that, Nigeria is the country with the second highest number of malnourished children.

According to her, UNICEF in efforts to aid Kano state Government in the fight against stunting, will expend $750,000.00 as counterpart funding to fight the scourge.
