FUTA Staffs Want VC, Bursar Remove From Office

Members of staff of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) on Friday continued with their protest in demanding for the resignation of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola and the Bursar, Dr. Emmanuel Oresegun over the financial scandal rocking the institution.

The protestors had been disallowing vehicular movements into the campus since the protest began by blocking the main gates as they accused the two heads of the institution of corruption.

Both Daramola and Oresegun are been alleged of syphoning government funds in the treasury of the school meant for further upgrading of the University.

The duo are currently under the watch of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegation of misappropriation of the university fund.

These unhappy staffs both academic and non-academic have been urging the EFCC to probe deeply into the finance of the federal Government University.

The Daily Times gathered that the aggrieved protesters were led by the leaders of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the institution.

The Committee is the umbrella body of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University, (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff of Nigeria Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NATT).

The protesters said the Federal Ministry of Education should set up an audit team to probe into the financial records of the institution starting from year 2012.

Dele Durojaiye, FUTA Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University, (SSANU) said the staffs are not happy of the level of corruption in the school.

Mr. Durojaiye alleged that Prof. Daramola has been using the fund accrued to the institution to attend for his own personal selfish needs without been challenged.

“The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola has been using the funds that belongs to the school for selfish needs.

“He is a corrupt man who has no good reputation because he has been using the institution’s fund”.

The SSANU Chairman added that Prof. Daramola had been receiving housing allowance from the treasury of the institution despite been given free home.

He alleged that the embattled Vice Chancellor had also been ferrying abroad getting expensive ticket on occasional bases on the finance of the institution.

“He doesn’t stay on the campus any longer but always travel abroad on the cost of the university spending millions of naira.

He insisted that all activities would continue to be grounded on the campus if Prof. Daramola and Dr. Oresegun are not removed from the institution.

“They can’t be under interrogation and remain in the school because they would be using its apparatus for their needs”.

Adegbenro Adebanjo, the Head of Public Relations and Protocol of FUTA, however, refuted the claims of the aggrieved staffs in a chat with reporters.

Adebanjo said allegations raised against the Vice Chancellor and the Bursar concerning the financial records of the institution were untrue.

He explained that the two heads of institution were invited by the officials of the Economic and financial Crimes due to the allegations levied against them by some staff who are dissatisfied.
