Fubara Reshuffles Cabinet, Names Christopher Green as New Attorney-General

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a minor cabinet reshuffle, announcing the redeployment of Christopher Green from the Ministry of Sports to the Ministry of Justice as the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

The strategic move was confirmed in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo.

The directive, which takes immediate effect, is seen as part of the governor’s efforts to strengthen his administration amid the ongoing political dynamics in the state.

According to the statement, Green, a legal practitioner and former Technical Committee Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), will assume his new role immediately.

However, he will also retain oversight of the Ministry of Sports until a substantive commissioner is appointed to fill the vacancy.

“The redeployment takes immediate effect following the approval at the last State Executive Council meeting for the year 2025, underscoring the Governor’s commitment to strengthening governance, ensuring continuity in service delivery and optimising the performance of key ministries within the state,” the statement read.

The Justice Ministry has been without a substantive commissioner following the exit of the former Attorney-General, Dagogo Iboroma (SAN).

Iboroma’s tenure was complicated by the protracted political crisis rocking the state; he was among the commissioners screened by the factional House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, loyal to the governor.

The appointment comes at a critical time as the state government navigates complex legal battles stemming from the rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The reshuffle occurs against a backdrop of heightened political tension. Minister Wike recently declared that “politics would resume fully” in January 2026, signaling a potential intensification of the power struggle.

Wike has also publicly criticized Governor Fubara for allegedly failing to honor political agreements and has suggested that support for President Bola Tinubu does not guarantee Fubara a second term.

Governor Fubara currently operates with a streamlined cabinet of eight commissioners who remained loyal after a wave of resignations by Wike loyalists earlier in the administration.
