FRSC Secures Jail Term for One-Way Driving on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured a two-month jail sentence without the option of fine for a motorist arrested for driving against traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, in a renewed crackdown on dangerous road violations.
The conviction was delivered by the Ojodu-Abiodun Magisterial District Court following a special joint enforcement operation aimed at curbing persistent one-way driving along the Kara–Opic axis of the busy expressway.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed the development in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, noting that the illegal practice had intensified due to ongoing bridge expansion joint repairs on both inbound and outbound sections of the corridor.
Disturbed by the rising level of recklessness and the heightened risk of avoidable crashes, the Lagos State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, initiated a joint intervention patrol involving the Ogun State FRSC Command, the Nigeria Police, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, and the Nigerian Army.
According to the FRSC, enforcement officers were strategically deployed at known flashpoints notorious for one-way driving and related traffic violations.
During the operation, officers intercepted Koko Moses, the driver of a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number MUS 89 YG, while driving against the flow of traffic. Further checks revealed that the offender was also driving without a valid driver’s licence, compounding the severity of the offence.
The offender was subsequently charged in court by the Divisional Police Officer of Warewa Police Station, CSP Ayegbede John, where he was found guilty and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment without an option of fine.
FRSC said the conviction sends a strong signal that traffic violations and impunity on Nigeria’s highways will no longer be tolerated, adding that the intervention patrol has already recorded a noticeable reduction in one-way driving incidents along the corridor.
The Corps reiterated its commitment to sustained enforcement and inter-agency collaboration to improve safety on major highways, especially during periods of construction and traffic diversion.
