FRSC Launches ‘Safe Wheel Nigeria’ Magazine to Deepen Road Safety Awareness
The Federal Road Safety Corps has unveiled the maiden edition of Safe Wheel Nigeria, a new magazine aimed at strengthening public awareness on road safety and promoting the country’s economic development.
The launch, held on Thursday in Abuja, brought together stakeholders from the transport, security, diplomatic and media sectors under the theme, “Renewed Hope for Safer Roads: Driving Safety and Logistics as Catalysts for Economic Development.”
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the publication aligns with the agency’s commitment to improving mobility and reducing road accidents nationwide.
According to him, road transportation remains central to economic growth, making safety on highways an urgent national concern.
“Mobility is a major factor for economic sustenance in any nation. With road travel accounting for almost 80 per cent globally, every journey must reflect our collective aspiration for national development. Nigeria stands at the centre of that renewed hope,” Mohammed stated.
He noted that the corps has strengthened its operations ahead of the festive season through intelligence-led patrols, improved logistics, and enhanced staff training.
He also highlighted FRSC’s recent efforts in driver health support and sporting achievements, particularly in handball.
Speaking on the significance of the magazine, the Corps Marshal said it would provide a platform for public feedback, expert contributions and national dialogue on safe mobility.
FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, described the magazine as more than a publication, calling it a national tool for advocacy and behavioural change.
“We launch far more than a magazine. This is a national movement for safer roads and a transport system that supports our country’s development aspirations,” he said.
The Special Guest of Honour and Chairman of Marketing+Media Ltd, Dr Toe Ekechi, commended the initiative, emphasising the role of communication in improving transport safety.
In a goodwill message, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stressed the importance of safe road networks in Africa’s trade and integration under the AfCFTA framework. Representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, she said the magazine would also help position Nigeria as a leader in global road safety practices.
“Information is the bridge between policy and practice. Let this magazine be a beacon of knowledge and a catalyst for change,” she said.
The Nigeria Police Force, represented by CSP Femi Adedeji, reaffirmed its readiness to support the FRSC in promoting safer highways.
President of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association, Nasifa Mohammed, expressed optimism that the publication would further raise road safety awareness at the grassroots level.
Nigeria continues to face alarming road safety challenges. According to FRSC data, the country records about 5,000 deaths and over 31,000 injuries annually. In 2024 alone, 5,421 people died in 9,570 reported crashes. Over 10,000 fatalities were recorded between 2023 and 2024, underscoring the scale of the crisis.
The new magazine is expected to feature expert insights, success stories, practical safety guidance, and discussions on technology, women and youth empowerment, and environmental sustainability in the transport sector.
