Fresh evidence of South Sudan atrocities amid genocide warning

We have heard further evidence of atrocities being committed in South Sudan, from refugees who’ve fled the ongoing civil war there.

People escaping from Equatoria, an area that was previously not affected by the fighting, have been speaking of killings and sexual violence against women.

It comes days after the UN said ethnic cleansing was taking place in parts of the world’s youngest country, and warned of the potential for genocide.

More than 350,000 South Sudanese have fled into neighbouring Uganda in the last five months.

The civil war erupted three years ago, following a dispute between the President Salva Kiir, who is from the Dinka ethnic group, and sacked vice-president, Riek Machar, who’s an ethnic Nuer.
