Foundation inaugurates handwash facilities, holds medical outreach

It was great jubilation at St Luke’s Anglican Church Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State when Nonso Nwaebili Foundation inaugurated state-of -the-art hand washing facilities, as a contribution to the fight against COVID-19.

The event took place during the 9th Okpoko Archdeaconry Women’s Conference, with the theme, The Mystery of Faith; Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

The foundation is a non-profit organisation and its obsession is to touch lives and improve the standard of living of the downtrodden.

It has awarded scholarships to young men and women whose parents were unable to live up to their educational responsibilities.

The foundation, among other humanitarian services, had engaged in awareness and sensitisation of various government policies, most especially the current pandemic, COVID-19.

The crux of the matter was the commissioning of the water facilities at the prime of preparation for school resumption in Anambra State.

It was gathered that St Luke’s Anglican Church Okpoko, has Holy Land Foundation Nursery, Primary and Secondary School inside the compound.

The borehole dug by Senator Alphonsus Ibeke had dilapidated, but was partially revived by the St Luke’s Anglican Church.

The pupils in search of water had to disturb the priest in the church, before they could water.

Therefore, the provision of the water facility by Nonso foundation will go a long way in helping the students, especially now handwashing is sacro-sanct to Healthy living.

Commissioning the project, the founder, Nonso Nwaebili (a lawyer), said his target was to establish the handwash facility in all the churches and schools in Ogbaru local government area, as his personal contribution to the fight against coronavirus.

The foundation also presented over 100 facemasks to the women and promised to supply hand sanitizers.

Nwaebili, who is also the Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Liaison Matters, disclosed that he was motivated by the humane nature of the state’s helmsman and his wife, Ebelechukwu.

According to him, Obiano has transformed governance and provided veritable opportunities for youths to participate in political activities, as well as getting involved in decision making.

“It is no doubt that Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano has restored hope to the hopeless. She has touched many lives, both indigiens and non indegiens.

“She is indeed a mother to us. She has also built over 20 houses for the widows across the state. These are some legacies that should be emulated,” Nwabili noted.

He urged parents and teachers to join hands in creating awareness on the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

Nwaebili, whose mother was a Speaker in Anambra State House of Assembly, charged youths to take responsibility for their future and refrain from being political thugs.

He urged the youths to channel their resources to positivity and stop engaging in societal ills that would ruin their lives.

Nwaebili also warned those who get involved in forceful canal knowledge of opposite sex, to refrain or face the wrath of the law.

The Venerable in-charge of St Luke’s Anglican Church, Okpoko, Nathaniel Egwuenu, commended Mr. Nwaebili for such initiative, in providing for the society.

Ven Egwuenu used the opportunity to call on the government to intervene in the roads in Okpoko, and described them as death traps.

He observed that the roads had affected their commercial and other economic activities, especially now the rain is at its increase.

His wife, Mrs. Chinenye Egwuenu, described the handwash facility as one of the major projects received from an individual.

She said the facility which was strategically positioned at the entrance of the church would be a fitting factor to defeat COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the church members, Mr. Philip Eze, said with the installation of the handwashing facility, he would be comfortable to send his children to school, when schools resume.

Eze whose two children are enrolled in the school, said he had expressed fear that there would be high spread of COVID-19 in schools for lack of handwash facility and other protocols.

“With this now, I will tell my children to start preparing for school. I will also inform them to wash hands at intervals and observe social distancing, especially in class and during leisure hours,” hadded.

The Foundation had earlier organised a medical outreach which took place at St. Gregory Catholic Church, Iyiowa Odekpe.

The event wasattended by dignitaries who eulogised the founder.

Among them was the member representing Anambra East and West at the National Assembly, Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe who commended Nwaebili for his thoughtfulness in remembering to give back to the society and said that such would attract more blessings for him.

Obidigwe implored all to be sacrificial in giving to the people as he is a living testimony to what God can do when you give sacrificially.

The Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu, commended the spirit of philanthropy as demonstrated by Barr. Nwaebili in providing hand washing facilities as well as seeing to the health needs of the people.

“The emergence of Nonso Nwaebili Foundation (NNF) couldn’t have come at a better time than now that humanity sits on the edge of precipice over Covid-19. This humane-touch has proven that as individuals, we can add value to society and assist the government in meeting the needs of the people”.
