Foiled Benin Coup: Adeyanju hails Tinubu, seeks tougher home front anti-terror action

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces for what he described as a firm and timely intervention that helped stop the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin.
He said the development shows Nigeria’s continued influence in the sub region and the importance of protecting democratic rule across West Africa.
Adeyanju said the outcome in Benin should make Nigerians proud because it reinforces the country’s long standing position against military rule.
He stated that the actions taken reflect Nigeria’s commitment to stability at a time when several Sahel nations have experienced coups or political disruptions.
While noting that preserving democracy in the region is essential for peace, he added that the message to anti democratic actors should now be clear.
“I commend President Bola Tinubu and the gallant Nigerian Armed Forces for their decisive intervention that helped halt the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin. This is truly a proud moment for me as a Nigerian who loves democracy and understands the dangers of military rule.
“Let this stand as a clear signal to all who seek to undermine democracy in the Sahel that their days are numbered.” Adeyanju said.
Adeyanju also urged the government to show even stronger resolve in dealing with security challenges within Nigeria. According to him, the courage displayed in Benin should be replicated at home.
He stressed that Nigeria must now match its regional leadership with a firm domestic security approach. He argued that citizens deserve to see the same level of coordination and determination used to protect democracy in Benin applied to the fight against terrorists and bandit groups inside the country.
“The same might displayed in Benin should be applied with even greater resolve to crush the terrorist groups operating within our borders, so that Nigeria can truly lead by example.” Adeyanju said
The statement comes after reports that an attempted coup in Benin was quickly contained through a coordinated response involving support from Nigeria.
