First Girls-only science, tech fair debuts in Lagos today

The first-ever Girls-only Science and Technology Fair in the country will be staged in Lagos today, November 8, 2017 according to the organisers, the Christopher Kolade Foundation (CKF).

The theme of the fair is “SHE 2017 Science & Amp Technology for Girls by Girls”.

It will feature exhibitions of SHE Initiative clubs from six public schools in Lagos State.

A consultant to the Foundation, Mrs. Omobola Lano, said in a statement on Monday that the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, would give a keynote address at the fair.

“The Fair is designed to showcase the technology proficiency of girls in state public schools as well as motivate them towards exploring the exciting world of science and technology.

“The initiative is also to offer girls from low and middle-income families a unique opportunity to experience science and technology in “relatable and interactive ways,” she said in the statement, a copy of which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The statement added:“ The programme is designed to stir participants’ curiosity and interest in exploring the world of science and technology, change the stereotypes around girls and science.

“It will equip them with life-long skills in the realms of science and technology, while also offering personal development, leadership and ethics education.

“It is absolutely imperative that we connect young girls and women to a career pipeline, and it begins with overcoming gender stereotypes around science and demystifying science and technology education.”

Dr. Christopher Kolade, erstwhile Chairman of Cadbury Plc, served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the U.S. under ex-President Oluegun Obasanjo-led administration between 1999 and 2003.
