Fire Service moves to curb rising harmattan fires with safety training

The FCT Federal Fire Service has stepped up efforts to reduce dry season fire outbreaks by training traders in the Kugbo Timber market on practical safety measures.
The exercise, carried out by the Fire Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement unit, followed a fresh assessment of the market’s high-risk environment.
The unit head, Chief Superintendent of Fire Chinweuba Akam, explained that the intervention became necessary as harmattan often brings an increase in fire incidents.
He noted that the market’s heavy use of combustible materials such as timber, sawdust and fabrics makes it even more vulnerable.
“As you know, the harmattan season is characterised with fire incidents and that’s why we have choosen to inform them at this period so that they will be prepared to avoid loss or minimise loss it if it occurs.
“We are also carrying out this training because of the material they deal with. If you look around this place, you will see that almost all what they are using is in class A fire.
“They are dealing with class A fire materials such as solid materials, timbers, sawdust, fabrics amongst others and these are easily combustible,” he said.
The IIE head said that traders will also be taught on the different types of fire extinguishers and how to appropriately use them in tackling fire.
Akam disclosed that after surveying the market, the service has decided to map out spots where fire aid fighting equipments should be installed.
He added that orientation on the appropriate firefighting equipment to purchase will be recommended.
According to him, the unit being in charge of fire safety education and enforcement, will continue to sensitise and inspect marketers to ensure compliance.
“If anyone is found proving stubborn or going against the laws that are guiding fire safety, we will force the person to do the needful,” he warned.
