FIIRO DG laments non-recognition of research

The Director-General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), Dr Gloria Elemo, has lamented lack of academic recognition for the research works carried out by FIIRO researchers and inadequate incentives. Consequently, many researchers have had to abandon the institute for lucrative appointments in international agencies, other countries, and universities.

Dr. Elemo, made this revelation during a recent visit by the Senate Committee on Science and Technology to solicit for the consideration of professorship cadre for researchers of the institute in order to stem the brain drain in the country.

“Our researchers are being attracted by international bodies and countries.  South Africa is a major culprit.  We have a large number of Nigerians in the Diaspora.  We should do something to improve remuneration.

“Also appointment of research professors in research institutes would help to retain them.  We are appealing that our people should be able to attain research professorship here.  Currently, at most, they retire as Chief Research Officers,” she said.

Responding, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, chairman of the committee, advised the institute to liaise with the National Universities Commission as well as affiliate with universities to offer programmes that would enable researchers to fulfill the teaching role that contributes to their elevation to the professorship cadre.

“There are two ways to get it done.  The direct way is that you can apply to a university and get affiliation and maybe you offer one or two courses.  I did it at NASDRA (National Space Research and Development Agency).  They are going to teach two or three courses in affiliation with the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.

“You can get this done by working with the universities and the National Universities Commission.  The laboratories here are better than those in most universities. But don’t bite more than you can chew.  Don’t choose too many courses,” he added.

He urged the institute to also lead the effort to diversify the economy by commercializing its research products through partnership with the private sector.

“FIIRO has a role to play in the diversification of the economy.  I am happy you have a relationship with the private sector.  I would advise you to intensify your training on the adoption of your technology by SMEs.

“I think packaging is very important.  I really appreciate your effort in this area to establish a packaging centre that can help us package our products.  By now we should have canned Zobo.  If we can package Zobo very well there is no reason we cannot export it,” he said.

Boroffice also pledge the committee’s support for the institute’s research on local production of artificial hair extension, which its researchers said would cost about N500 million.
