FG warns Nigerians against deceptive overseas recruitment into combat zones

The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against falling for deceptive overseas recruitment schemes that lure citizens into foreign combat zones under false promises of jobs and migration opportunities.

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government expressed concern over what it described as a disturbing rise in cases of illegal recruitment of Nigerians into foreign armed conflicts.

According to the statement, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria expresses grave concern over the rising and alarming cases of Nigerian citizens being illegally recruited to participate in foreign armed conflicts.”

The Ministry cited recent media investigations and security reports indicating that some Nigerians were recruited under false pretences, including promises of lucrative employment, security jobs, educational opportunities, or migration incentives. It noted that several victims were later deployed to combat zones after being misled and coerced into signing military service contracts.

It further revealed that recruiters allegedly use deceptive offers such as high monthly salaries, signing bonuses and fast-tracked citizenship to attract unsuspecting citizens. In some cases, victims were reportedly compelled to sign contracts written in foreign languages without proper legal guidance.

The statement added that travel documents of affected persons were allegedly confiscated upon arrival in destination countries, while intermediaries arranged their trips under tourist or other non-military visa categories.

The Federal Government therefore issued a firm warning to citizens. “The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally warns all citizens against engaging in or accepting any offer that involves participation in foreign armed conflicts.”

It stressed that such actions not only endanger lives but may also violate Nigerian and international laws regulating mercenary activities and foreign enlistment.

“Nigerians who choose to participate in foreign conflicts outside approved governmental frameworks do so at their own risk,” the statement said.

To tackle the development, the government said it is working with relevant domestic and international partners to investigate the matter and strengthen public awareness on the dangers of illegal recruitment.

Nigerian Missions abroad have also been directed to increase consular vigilance and provide timely advisory services to citizens.

The Ministry urged parents, guardians, community leaders and educational institutions to sensitise young Nigerians on the risks linked to deceptive foreign recruitment schemes.

Citizens were further advised to verify overseas job or study offers through official government channels and report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.

Reaffirming its commitment, the government stated that Nigeria remains determined to safeguard the welfare and dignity of its citizens at home and abroad and will not tolerate the exploitation or trafficking of Nigerians into foreign conflicts under any circumstances.
