FG, University Workers Meeting Update

The latest industrial action by the non-teaching workers union of Nigerian universities have been described by the Nigerian government as unconstitutional and negate labor laws.

This was the opening remark of Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Jobs, who presided over the first meeting with the organized labor since the workers launched the strike on Friday, 5 February 2021.

Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Board, the Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission, and the representatives of SSANU and NASU were present after some hours of Thursday’s discussion, which was still unable to push the workers back to their workplaces.

A consultation convened on Friday 2 February failed to address the workers’ demands, thus the current strike by the Nigerian Universities Senior Staff Association, SSANU, and the Nigerian Universities Non-academic Staff Union, NASU.

Among other things, the unions are pressing for the abolition of IPPIS, the Consolidated Payroll, and Staff Information Scheme, since it has refused to resolve its peculiarities, the equal allocation of the 40 billion naira earned government allowance to all employees in the university system and the payment of pensions to retired employees.
