FG Inaugurates Committee for Nigeria’s First Oil Spill Summit

The Federal Government, FG recently inaugurated a Joint Project Management Committee (JPMC) for the First Nigeria International Oil Spill Summit and Expo (NIOSS 2026), unveiled its official logo, and formally launched preparations for the landmark event.

Inaugurating the nine-member committee in Abuja on February 18, Sen. George Akume—represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana—highlighted Nigeria’s oil spill crisis, with over 1,000 cases reported annually and 13 million barrels spilled historically, causing environmental damage, biodiversity loss, livelihood destruction, health issues, and economic setbacks.

A statement by Dewan Nengak Goshit, Head of Information & Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), quoted Akume urging the JPMC to work with professionalism and patriotism to ensure transparency and timely delivery. NIOSS will enhance oil spill response, drive innovation and investment, promote multi-stakeholder collaboration, and position Nigeria as a leader in coastal restoration and climate action.

NOSDRA Director-General Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke reaffirmed the agency’s commitment, describing NIOSS as a key platform uniting government, industry, communities, researchers, investors, and advocates to craft strategies for prevention, response, and ecosystem recovery.

The JPMC comprises Mr. Ifiok Abba (Chairman, OSGF), Mrs. Margret Adesida (NOSDRA), Dr. Sola O. Oladipo (NOSDRA), Prof. Babatunde Bernard (OSGF), Mr. Promise Amaha (GCHI), Mr. Tije Cyprian Pius (NOSDRA), Mr. Ali Gambo (GCHI), Oluwakemi Fasoranti (GCHI), and Mr. Guti A.D. (Secretary, OSGF).

The initiative, led by NOSDRA and Green Clean Innovation Hub Limited (GCHI), underscores federal support for community-centered environmental solutions amid Nigeria’s oil sector challenges.
