The Federal Government yesterday honored the late President Muhammadu Buhari at a National Memorial Service, reflecting on his enduring legacies.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, called on Nigerians to remember Buhari’s contributions to the nation.
Senator Akume described the late President as a disciplined and principled leader whose life exemplified conviction, patriotism, and integrity. He acknowledged that while Buhari was “not perfect,” his fight for national security, social protection, and institutional reforms, including the Petroleum Industry Act, would remain significant in Nigeria’s development history.
“Though not perfect, he fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. His legacy in national security, social protection, and institutional reforms – including the Petroleum Industry Act – will remain part of Nigeria’s development history,” Akume stated.

The SGF also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. He emphasized that this action was more than symbolic, aiming to inspire future generations to lead with courage and sacrifice, mirroring President Buhari’s example.
The memorial service saw attendance from key figures, including the Representative of the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate Majority Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, members of the National Assembly, Ministers, top government officials, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, retired Permanent Secretaries, and other dignitaries.
President Tinubu had previously described Buhari as “a good man, a decent man, an honorable man.” Tinubu noted Buhari’s unwavering commitment to national service, even during a special Federal Executive Council session held in Buhari’s honor. He highlighted Buhari’s qualities of simplicity, humility, and resistance to the trappings of power.
Buhari, who served as both military Head of State (1984-1985) and a two-term democratically elected President (2015-2023), passed away in London on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82. His legacy continues to be a subject of national reflection and debate.
