FG, Delta urged to provide food, power for Nigerians

A scholar in assessment and measures in Delta state, Dr. Ifekam Ugwala, has urged the state and federal governments to provide food and power supply in order to justify its sit-at-home directive to curtail the spread of COVID-19

Ugwala, who spoke to journalists in Asaba on Tuesday, said that the state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa and President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to lockdown for another 14 days, would promote hunger which is worse than the coronavirus pandemic.

He observed that the provision of food and electricity was essential for the survival of Deltans and Nigerians while the lockdown lasts, adding that many Nigerians cannot feed three times a day.

According to him, the restriction on movement was only being adhered to in breach than in observance, adding that it was almost after one week that the government started making half hazards attempt at distributing food items.

Recall that the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, asserted that there were no hungry Nigerians because the government had distributed food items and materials worth N100 billion.

Ugwala noted that the minister should provide data of the real hungry Nigerians that benefitted from the acclaimed largesse.

He said: “As a way of curtailing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and stay -at -home order, governments must provide food for the people and the people should also adhere to washing their hands regularly.

“Logically, many Deltans and Nigerians would prefer to contact the coronavirus looking for food than die of hunger at home.

“I believe that governments should make more sacrifices for Nigerians and not to lockdown without making provision for food and others items for citizens as there is hunger everywhere, rather than pretending that all is well.”

Speaking further, Ugwala noted that it was clear that the country lacks enough personal protective Equipment for its medical personnel.
