FEC Approves Draft Policy on Renewable Energy

The Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan, has approved the draft of National Policy on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the nation.

Minister of Power, Prof Chinedu Nebo, who briefed State House correspondents after Wednesday’s meeting alongside his Information counterpart, Patricia Akwashiki, said the country had hydro, solar, wind and other sources of energy in abundance, hence the need for a policy on renewable energy.

The policy, according to Nebo, would boost electricity supply, improve energy mix and security, as well as energy security.

He added that the new policy would also create new job opportunities for Nigerians.

“The overall objective of the policy is to increase access using renewable energy mix, create new business opportunities and new jobs, support global efforts towards green economies and addressing climate change problems.

“In addition, the policy will promote and encourage efficient use of energy and energy conservation in Nigeria,” the minister said.
