FCTA reveals plans to establish more schools

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has revealed plans to establish new Senior Secondary Schools so as to help in decongesting the existing ones.

Addressing Journalist during a tour on some Secondary schools within the capital city, the Acting Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Malam Umar Marafa, said the approval for the establishment of the new schools have been secured.

“We have been able to get approval for the establishment of more secondary school in order to address the issue of congestion. Hopefully, very soon new schools will spring up to decongest the present ones.

“We are going to see the viability of the areas that we have to establish schools and how much funds will be available for the project.”

Speaking further, Marafa disclosed that the inspection was to ascertain and ensure that everything was in order before schools fully resumes.

While expressing satisfaction on the level of preparedness to welcome the students for the new session, Marafa noted that the measure will not only make learning easier for students but will also ensure access to quality education.

“We are very much satisfied with what we have seen on ground so far in all the schools we visited.

“We have visited Government Science and Technical Schools, Area 3 Garki and Government Secondary School, Jabi. We have seen the primary and junior secondary schools,” Marafa said.

On his part, the Chairman FCT Secondary Education Board, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammad, said there are 62 secondary schools under the board, adding that 18 are boarding schools while 44 are days schools.

Also he disclosed that on a daily basis, the board receives no fewer than 150 request from various communities for the establishment of senior secondary schools.

“On my table, I have more than 150 requests for the establishment of senior secondary schools from communities and we are making critical analysis on those requests.”

He said that the board was making efforts to address shortage of manpower and inadequate teachers in some critical subjects.

The Executive Chairman, FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Kabir Matazu, disclosed that the board was working towards completion of all the schools project inherited from the previous administration.

“As I speak to you now we have almost reached 90 per cent completion of those projects.”
