FCT IDP camps free of meningitis, says FEMA DG

Contrary to reports of outbreak of cerebral meningitis in IDP camps in Abuja, the Director General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Abbas Idris, has said that efforts put by its agency preparatory to any occurrence yielded positively as no outbreak of the deadly disease was recorded in any of the FCT IDP camps.

The Director General stated this in an exclusive interview with The Abuja Times, while putting up strategies to ensure that FCT is free of the allegation of the outbreak of cerebral meningitis.

He said his office before now had put all necessary logistics with the inclusion of international agencies on provision of expertise and other material donations to ensure that certain diseases are contained.

“We have entered working relationship with several international bodies such the Japanese International Corporation (JOICA). The Korean Republic has been on ground in providing health care responsibilities.

We have different drugs donated to preventive care and such drugs were also distributed to all the IDP camps and I think that most of the diseases being taunted now have been taken care of before they came and that is why the FCT Health Secretariat did not mince word to say that FCT is free of the diseases”.

The Director General speaking further remarked that his office having assured the health status of the inmates in all the camps has a record of over 70% living normal life and have been certified to move about and mix up with people with no fear of infesting other FCT residents with diseases.

He also stressed that the present administration of FCT minister, Malam Mohammed Bello, has recently approved the employment mobilisation of over 133 nursing professionals to be deployed at various primary health facilities against any occurrence or outbreak of any diseases.
