FCET Yaba marks 50 anniversary, convokes 5,522 graduands

Activities which mark the 50 anniversary and the 37th convocation ceremony of the federal college of Education, technical Yaba, Lagos commenced on Monday.
The ceremony which begins fully on Wednesday November 1, with a convocation lecture to be delivered by Professor Emmanuel Ohize of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, with the theme: Technological Innovation: A Tool for National Growth and Development while the main convocation and award ceremony takes place on Thursday November 2.
Speaking at a press Conference to herald the weeklong celebration, the Provost of the College, Dr. Siji Olusanya, said the institution was founded in 1967 to provide technical teachers for the country, stressing that the college had grown and expanded from two academic and technical department to five schools, namely, technical education, vocation education, business education and science education.
The provost said that the institution had also partnered the Federal University of Technology, Minna and the University of Benin in running a degree programmes with the full accreditation of the National University Commission (NUC).
Olusanya disclosed that the college had withnessed tremendous improvement in manpower, while many academic staffs had acquired doctorate degree and masters through the TETFUND intervention programme, adding that there has been significant completion of physical project and infrastructure in the institution which had ease the accomdation problem of staffs and students.
He said “The institution had been in existence since 1967 as foremost technical college in Nigeria. It is worthy to note during this period under review the college has grown and expanded steadily in academic and technical, the college operate on five schools namely general education, technical education, vocation, business education and science education.
“Manpower development in the college has withness tremendous improvement many academic staffs have acquired doctorate degree in different disciplines through generous sponsorship by TETFUND,” Olusanya said.
Arile Olajuwon Josiah of the Department Office and Technology and Management Education, emerged the best graduating student, with a CGPA of 4.62.
A breakdown of the list of graduands showed that a total of 5,522 would be graduating beginning from the 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017 academic years, and would be conferred with National Certificate In Education (NCE) full time, National Certificate In Education (NCE) distance learning and Professional Diploma In Education (PDE).
