Fayose: PDP may come fourth in 2027 — party has lost its structure

Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its soul and risks finishing fourth in the 2027 general elections.
Fayose, a former member of the G5, made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he painted a grim picture of the party’s current state.
“You know the situation of our party today, and it is in my prayer that the PDP does not come fourth in the coming elections,” he said.
“When I came here, I said the party was already going into carcass. Pretenders can pretend, but you know that managing the party has become an issue; everybody in that party today is doing to your tent, o Israel.”
Fayose blamed the exodus of key leaders and growing internal crisis for the PDP’s weakening grip, warning that the party was losing relevance across the country.
“Today, I am telling you the PDP will come fourth in the general elections. In most states, they are already compromised,” he added.
The former governor listed several big names who have dumped the PDP in recent times.
“They have eased out so many leaders. It’s good for them, but let me remind you, I was part of the G5,” Fayose said.
“In the same PDP, the presidential candidate has left, the vice-presidential candidate has left, senators have left, and governors have left.”
While he has not officially quit the party, Fayose gave indications that he may be on his way out. He said he deliberately stayed away from the party’s last national executive committee (NEC) meeting, despite being invited.
The former governor, however, applauded the PDP’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South, calling it a strategic move.
He argued that President Bola Tinubu’s rise to power had shortened the path for the presidency to return to the North.
“I recall he told me that the shortest distance between the north and the south is APC,” Fayose said.
“I could not understand at the time because he told me that after Buhari’s four years, anybody should be able to wait for another four years.
“So, zoning to the south by the PDP is good for them because today Tinubu is the shortest distance for power to return to the north.”
Whether Fayose will still be flying the PDP flag by 2027 remains uncertain. But his comments point to deeper issures in a party once dominant but now struggling for direction.
