Herdsmen have again attacked Umulokpa community in Uzo-uwani LGA of Enugu State, leaving over ten persons dead.
The deadly attack was launched by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the dead of the night on Saturday, June 11, 2022.
Our correspondent gathered that among the victims of the attack are one Mr Nwankwo Obodoeze and his two sons, Nwankwo Sunday and Nwankwo Cyril.
A close relative of the family, who narrated the sad incident to journalists, said they were sleeping in the night when they were suddenly woken up by the sound of gunshots.
“It was a war situation; we never saw it coming, especially as our community was not having any form of misunderstanding with anyone.
“Everyone started running out from their homes; however, some who were unlucky were caught up in the mayhem.
“Among them is my uncle and his two sons; they were butchered like cows,” Chidieebere Nwankwo narrated amid tears.
He further revealed that the whereabouts of one of their uncles, Nwankwo Mathew remained unknown after the attack.
“According to him, “Mathew is the one training most of our people in school; even Uncle Obodoeze’s son that is schooling in Japan, he is the one paying his fees.
“But as it stands now, Fulani herdsmen have caught our dreams short.”
Apart from the Nwankwo family, a woman, identified as Mary Ude and her child were also hacked to death by the militant herders.
A community source equally hinted that five other youths were also killed inside the bush.
“Their bodies were recovered two days after normalcy returned and we conducted a search across the bushes,” a community source hinted.
Meanwhile, the police put the death figure at 15, while those injured are said to be up to 20.
It could be recalled that in 2016, marauding herdsmen also attacked Nimbo community in Enugu State, killing scores.
