FAAN, MTN Launch Free WiFi at Lagos, Abuja Airports

Passengers travelling through Nigeria’s major gateways can now access free internet services following the launch of complimentary airport WiFi by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in partnership with MTN Nigeria.

The service has gone live at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The official launch took place at MMIA Terminal 2, where the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Airport Operations, Captain Abdullahi Mahmood, described the initiative as a milestone in enhancing passenger experience and strengthening digital infrastructure at Nigerian airports.

Also present at the event was Lynda Saint-Nwafor, Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN Nigeria, representing the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Karl Toriola.

Kuku said the WiFi service, which is completely free for passengers and other airport users, would be extended to the MMIA temporary terminal and other international airports across the country within the next three months.

She noted that the partnership demonstrates how effective public–private collaboration can modernise critical infrastructure and deepen Nigeria’s digital economy, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the reform drive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

“Today, in partnership with MTN Nigeria, we flip the switch on free, reliable, high-speed internet connectivity for airport users. As of now, this service is live and operational at Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,” she said.

“For too long, our passengers have experienced the frustration of being disconnected when connection mattered most. Today, we change that story. We transform waiting time into working time and replace frustration with functionality.”

Kuku emphasised that access to reliable internet is no longer a luxury but an operational necessity in modern aviation hubs, adding that the Authority is not merely aligning with global best practices but implementing them.

In her remarks, Saint-Nwafor assured passengers that the service would be reliable, secure and efficient. She commended FAAN’s leadership for its foresight and collaboration in delivering the project.

According to her, the initiative underscores the strength of public–private partnerships and reflects MTN’s commitment to enabling digital access in public spaces.

“Connectivity is no longer a luxury. Whether for business, accessing vital information, staying in touch with loved ones or using time productively, reliable connectivity has become an enabler of modern living,” she said.

She disclosed that MTN would roll out on-ground engagements over the next month at the Lagos and Abuja airports to drive awareness and encourage usage, adding that the connection process has been designed to be simple and user-friendly.

Saint-Nwafor further explained that the WiFi platform is analytics-enabled, allowing FAAN and MTN to understand usage patterns and peak periods to improve service delivery, while ensuring full compliance with privacy and data protection regulations.

She said the initiative elevates service standards at Nigerian airports, enhances convenience and productivity for travellers, and reinforces MTN’s support for national infrastructure development and digital transformation.
