FAAN Begins Annual Aircraft Marshaller Revalidation to Strengthen Safety
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has commenced its 2026 training year with the revalidation of aircraft marshals ahead of airport certification and safety audits.
The programme, held every year, is designed to refresh the skills and knowledge of personnel responsible for guiding aircraft on the ground.
The training follows the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s NCAA-AC-ARD049 Guidance on Airside Safety Management and incorporates international standards from the International Air Transport Association Airport Handling Manual and International Civil Aviation Organisation/Airports Council International guidelines, including Annexes 2, 14, and 19.
Mr Fortune Idu, Director of International Training at FCI International Centre for Technical Development, said the programme aims to produce efficient, safety-conscious marshallers capable of operating effectively in dynamic airfield environments.
Mrs Toyin Akinlade, General Manager of FAAN Training School, noted that the authority under Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku is committed to elevating manpower development in airport operations. She said the school works with FCI International to continuously enhance marshaller competence.
Mr Nanatim Rindap, General Manager of Airfield Operations, highlighted the critical role of marshallers in ensuring safe aircraft movements. He stressed that understanding signals, maintaining situational awareness, and responding to hazards require regular training to uphold operational standards.
FAAN also confirmed that all new technical staff joining the marshalling unit will undergo station-based induction and basic marshaller training. The programme covers aircraft signals and comprehensive work practices essential for safe ground operations, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to operational safety and excellence.
