Eze, Gyokeres Down Spurs as Arsenal Go Five Points Clear
Arsenal F.C. midfielder Eberechi Eze struck twice as the Gunners thrashed Tottenham Hotspur F.C. 4-1 on Sunday to restore their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Eze, who nearly joined Spurs before moving from Crystal Palace F.C. in August, scored his first goals since netting a hat-trick in November’s north London derby.
Pressure had mounted on Mikel Arteta’s side after draws against Brentford and Wolves allowed Manchester City F.C. to close the gap.
But the hosts responded in style, inflicting more misery on their rivals in Igor Tudor’s first game as interim Spurs boss.
Eze opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, hooking home from close range.
Tottenham equalised almost immediately through Randal Kolo Muani.
Viktor Gyökeres restored Arsenal’s lead early in the second half with his most significant goal yet for the Gunners.
Eze then grabbed his second after Guglielmo Vicario denied Bukayo Saka.
Gyökeres wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time.
Arsenal now hold a five-point advantage, although City have a game in hand ahead of their April showdown.
Tottenham remain just four points above the relegation zone.
Liverpool Leave It Late
Alexis Mac Allister scored in the 97th minute as Liverpool F.C. edged Nottingham Forest F.C. 1-0.
Forest, under new boss Vítor Pereira, looked set for a point before the late drama.
Mac Allister had earlier seen a goal ruled out after the ball struck his arm.
However, he swept home the rebound after Virgil van Dijk’s header was saved.
Liverpool remain sixth but are level on points with Chelsea and Manchester United, and within six of Aston Villa.
“I love scoring, I love winning,” Mac Allister said. “But we need to improve.”
Elsewhere, Fulham F.C. beat Sunderland 3-1, while Crystal Palace F.C. secured a 1-0 win over Wolves thanks to a late strike from Evann Guessand.
Bottom side Wolves had Ladislav Krejčí sent off, compounding their struggles near the foot of the table.
