Ex-Super Eagles Striker Anthony Ujah Retires from Professional Football

Former Super Eagles forward Anthony Ujah has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.

Ujah, who last featured for Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv, revealed his decision in an emotional post on social media on Friday. “Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football,” the striker wrote.

The Nigerian’s stint at Botev Plovdiv was plagued by injuries, limiting him to just five appearances for the club. Despite the setback, he managed to score twice during his short spell before being sidelined.

Ujah enjoyed the peak of his club career in Germany, where he spent over a decade playing for several Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 teams. His career included stints with Mainz 05, Cologne, Werder Bremen, Union Berlin, and Eintracht Braunschweig, where he was regarded as a reliable forward with a strong work ethic and goal-scoring instinct.

On the international stage, Ujah earned seven caps for the Nigerian national team, scoring once. He made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2013 and was part of the pool of strikers considered for selection during the country’s preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Though he did not cement a permanent role in the squad, his contributions were acknowledged by fans who appreciated his commitment whenever called upon.

Born in Ugbokolo, Benue State, Ujah began his professional career with Warri Wolves in Nigeria before moving to Norway in 2008 to join Lillestrøm SK. His performance in Europe quickly caught the attention of German clubs, where he spent the majority of his career.
