Ex-IGP Solomon Arase Dies at 69

Solomon Arase, former inspector-general of police (IGP), is dead.

A family source confirmed that Arase died on Sunday at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness. He was 69.

“We announce the passage of Solomon Ehigiator Arase, former inspector-general of police, who passed away at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a short illness,” a statement from the family read.

Arase, who hailed from Edo state, served as the 18th IGP between 2015 and 2016.

During his tenure, he introduced reforms such as community-oriented policing, improvement of welfare for officers, and promotion of professionalism and accountability in the force.

After his retirement, he was appointed chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), where he continued to play an active role in police administration.

A lawyer by training, Arase was also a member of the Body of Benchers.
