Etsu Nupe calls for inclusion of Nupe language in school curriculum
The Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has admonished the concerned education authorities, to, as a matter of urgency, include the study of Nupe language in the school’s curriculum.
The monarch gave the charge while inaugurating the 2018 Nupe Day Celebration Committee.
The event slated for June 26, 2018, at his Wadata Palace in Bida, headquarters of Nupe nation.
Alhaji Abubakar decried a situation where indigenous languages are facing extinction due to the unbridled influence of foreign languages among the people.
He challenged the committee to include speaking of Nupe language for at least ten minutes without injection of English or Hausa languages as part of the competition during the celebration.
The tradition ruler believed that such a completion will not only promote Nupe language, but also allow the people, especially, the youth, to be proud of their indigenous languages.
The Etsu Nupe also seized the occasion to deny media reports that he accused the state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello of nepotism and incompetence, saying at no time did he make such a dangerous comment against the governor.
” I hold Mr. Governor in high esteem, and will never say such a thing against his person or office”.
Earlier the chairman of the committee, Alhaji M.T. Mamman, assured Etsu Nupe of a hitch free celebration.
He said the unity, progress and cohesiveness of Nupe Nation will be paramount in the activities of this year ‘s Nupe Day.
According to him, culture, merit award to deserving personalities, agricultural exhibition, regatta, and others will dominate this year’s celebration.
Mallam Ibrahim Akanya, will serve as Secretary, while Isah Isah Mohammed will be the Assistant Secretary of the occasion.
