Enugu council goes after unhygienic food vendors

The Nsukka Local Government Area, in Enugu State has warned food vendors to maintain good food hygiene, as it would commence arrest and prosecution of offenders in June
The Chairperson, Nsukka Caretaker Committee, Prof Rose Onah, said the warning became necessary owing to the attitude of some food vendors in the areas, who display their food in an unhealthy environment.
“I have observed, with dismay, how some food vendors display bean cake (akara), plantain and fried chicken parts around the Nsukka old park every evening without covering them.
“These unhygienic practices, if not check, may expose unsuspecting consumers to health hazards, food poisoning, or even cause outbreaks of epidemic”, she said.
Onah directed that the food vendors should, henceforth, e display their products in a showcase or risk arrest and prosecution.
“Food vendors, in Nsukka town and environs, have been given one month from today to start displaying their goods in a showcase or they will be arrested.
“The council will set up taskforce at the expiration of one month and start enforcement and ensure that defaulters are arrested and prosecuted.
“Food vendors should consider the health of their customers and protect cooked food meant for public consumption, so that buyers will not use their money to buy death,” she said.
The LG boss said her administration would continue to give health of residents a priority since health was wealth. That is why the Council was doing its best to ensure that health facilities in the Council area awere in a good condition.
“My administration does not toy with issues concerning health as only a healthy person  can be productive, as well as contribute to national development”, she said.
