Enugu Assembly passes legislative financial autonomy bill

Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Thursday, unanimously passed into law the bill for a law to provide for the management of funds of the Enugu State Assembly and for related matters, House Bill no. 3, 2018, into law.

When the law is accented to by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Assembly will now be financially autonomous to control their Federal Allocations and other financial entitlements without interference from the executive.

Prior to the passage of the bill into law, the House had earlier received the report of the Joint Committee on Rules and Business and Appropriation presented by Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu who is also the leader of the House.

Ezeugwu explaining how they came about the report said they met on several occasions and did a painstaking job on the bill before making public their resolutions.

Following the submission of the report, Ezeugwu moved that the House be dissolved into a committee of the whole house to deliberate on the report after which the bill passed the final and the third reading.

Commenting on the importance of the bill, Speaker of the House, Hon. Edward Ubosi said that the bill was a package for the House so that they will not be dependent for their financial obligations.

Ubosi expressed the view that the Assembly would from next year begin to enjoy the financial freedom and manage their resources.
