Emmanuel Ogbeche emerges FCT NUJ Chairman

Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche, the Editor of Abuja Inquirer Newspaper has defeated Mrs Rafatu Salami of Voice of Nigeria (VON), to emerge the new Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Chapter, after polling 338 votes against 193.

The election which was concluded late on Dec. 1 at the NUJ secretariat Utako, saw Ochaka Ugwu of Peoples Daily Newspaper emerged unopposed as the secretary, while Mr Patrick Osedebamwen of CORE TV polled 319 votes to defeat Osisam Edeh of Good Shepherd who garnered 202 votes for the Vice Chairmanship seat.

It was a close call for the treasurer position as Aisha Kadala of Aso Radio polled 254 votes to defeat incumbent Blessing Adewale of Kakaaki press who secured 240 votes.

Walter Ukaegbu of Sun Newspaper was elected unopposed as the union’s Auditor, while Dorcas Jonah of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also emerged unchallenged as the Financial Secretary.

The newly elected chairman, Ogbeche told NAN that he would focus on restoring the dignity of journalists in the FCT.

“My major focus is to build bridges and connect stakeholders, so that we can have the kind of NUJ that we need.

“The NUJ we have now is broken, we must fix it back; stakeholders must understand that journalist are part and parcel of nation building,” he said.

NAN reports that Ogbeche takes over from Mr Paul Ella Abechi of the African Leadership Magazine who was elected on Oct. 4, 2015.
