El-Rufai rebukes ADC Vanguard over fake statement attribution

Nasir El-Rufai, Former Kaduna State governor, has disowned remarks falsely attributed to him by ADC Vanguard, a political support group linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, El-Rufai warned the group against fabricating statements, emphasising that he has his own social media accounts where he can share his views and opinions.

“I am going to disown the statements you created and attributed, not because I necessarily disagree with the message, but because I never made them. That is not the honest way to represent our party or gain traction. Please stop it forthwith,” he wrote.

The warning followed a now-deleted post in which ADC Vanguard claimed El-Rufai had described President Bola Tinubu’s administration as “Nigeria’s most corrupt, dishonest government”, accusing it of looting, fraud and favouritism.

In response to his rebuttal, the group issued an apology on X:

“Dear Mallam el-Rufai, we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. It was never our intention to misrepresent or attribute statements to you.

“We respect your voice and your platforms as the proper channels for your views. Going forward, we will ensure that only verified and authentic sources are reflected in our communications.”

ADC Vanguard, on its X page, claims to be the official mobilisation wing of the ADC coalition, which has positioned itself as the major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition brings together heavyweight politicians including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi and others.

El-Rufai has already begun grassroots activities for the coalition.

Last week, he declared support for Alex Adamu, the ADC candidate for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency seat, ahead of Saturday’s by-election.

The former governor made his interest known when he visited Chikun Local Government Area, despite being a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) until recently.

The SDP’s National Working Committee had earlier expelled him, declaring him ineligible to associate with the party in any capacity for the next 30 years.
