Edo State Government has said its decision to liberate women from economic squalor was predicated on the change mantra, to reposition women for effective role in nation building.
Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, stated this at the women empowerment programme organised by the state government at Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The speaker, who x-rayed the potentials of women towards national development, lamented that such potentials have been hampered by paucity of funds, gender inequality, obnoxious traditional practices and religious bigotry.
He assured that the house under his leadership remains committed to alleviating the plight of women and the vulnerable which informed the various bills and laws passed at the house to transform the fortunes of women.
The speaker argued that the era of utilising the potentials of women during campaigns and elections with coated tongues promises to enhance their welfare and renege on such promise had gone, stressing that politicians will now get votes based on performance.
Adjoto commended the Obaseki’s administration for putting women economic emancipation on the front burner and assured of the law makers support to realise the noble objectives.
Wife of the deputy governor, Mrs. Marian Shaibu, said the economic empowerment programme was in fulfillment of the present administration’s desire to give women voice in the midst of the present day realities.
Mrs. Shaibu, who stood in for the Edo first lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, said the economic empowerment programme for market women is designed to widen the scope of their business and turned them as major player in the state economy.
She attributed the feats recorded by the present administration within its one year in the saddle to the healthy relationship between the legislative and the executive arm and sued for its sustenance.
Mrs. Shaibu said what the state has witnessed in terms of good governance is a manifestation of combination of good leaders who are focused with foresight, passion and determination to place Edo State on the world map of development.
A statement endorsed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Jacob Afeinkhena, indicates that the women were enthusiastic on the kind gesture and pledged their unflinching support to the present administration.
The women described the series of support tailored to enhance their welfare as novel which is an indication that the Obaseki administration is out to make the difference.
The member representing Akoko-Edo two constituency at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, and the Head of Service Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, Mr. Eseigbe attended the ceremony.
