Edo FA Cup Final Holds April 8
Edo FA Cup final, earlier scheduled to hold on April 5 in line with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) directive will now hold on Wednesday, April 8, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The clash is between two unknown teams, as last year’s finalists, Insurers of Benin and Dynamites, have all crashed out.
The newly elected Edo Football Association (EFA) Chairman, Frank Ilaboya disclosed to Extra Time that the final was postponed due to logistics reasons.
He however said the final between Kukuruku Football Club from Edo North Local Government Area and BJ Foundation of Benin will be glamorous as arrangements are on to honour ex-players that had taken part in the competition in the past.
The former Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos chapter chairman, emphasised that the cup final would be filled with fanfare and pageantry.
“This is our first assignment and we are going to make it worthwhile. The board met on Friday and would meet again on Tuesday to finalise plans for the big event,” he said.
IIaboya however appealed to Edo Indigenes, Insurers supporters and corporate bodies to come to the aid of ailing Edo Football.
“Edo football is dying and we should not fold our arms and see it die; let’s join hands together and rescue it. There was a time in this state when Edo had more than three teams in the Nigeria Premier League, but today we have none. It is a shame!
“There was a time we had Bendel Insurance, New Nigeria Bank, Flash Flamingoes, Rubber Board and Bendel United playing in the elite league and they were doing well, but sadly enough there is none playing in the elite division again,” the Sportsville boss said with a tinge of regret.
