Edo 2020: Why I didn’t investigate Obaseki’s certificate as a governor- Oshiomhole

Oshiomhole and Obaseki

Former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole has given reasons for not investigating the certificate of the present governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Speaking with newsmen on Thursday, July 23, Oshiomhole said he was only marketing Obaseki back then and never questioned his certificates.

He said, “I have watched some videos where they are showing what I said about Pastor Ize-Iyamu when I was marketing Obaseki.

“Let me speak on that briefly. When you are selling Toyota, you cannot promote Mercedes. If you tell the people Mercedes is better they will not look at Toyota.

‘’As a governor, I never had a cause to speak on his certificates because I believed him on his face value.’’

Recall that in the suit filed in May before a federal high court in Abuja, Edobor Williams, Ugbesia Abudu Godwin and Amedu Dauda Anakhu accused Obaseki of forging his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) certificate in classical studies from the University of Ibadan.

They said the offence contravenes section 182(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which therefore makes Obaseki “not qualified to run or seek the office of the governor of Edo state” in the forthcoming 2020 governorship election.

However, the University of Ibadan confirmed the authenticity of the certificate of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state, stating that he graduated with Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in 1979.

In a statement by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, records of Obaseki’s admission shows that he gained admission in 1976 and graduated in 1979 in Classics.
