ECOWAS Chairman, Jonathan Meet over Polls
Barely five days to the presidential election, Chairman of Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States and Ghanaian President, John Draman Mahama, on Monday, held a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan and other stakeholders at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Speaking to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting, Mahama called on politicians to ensure a violence-free election, and admonished them to accept the wishes of the people in good faith.
The Ghanaian President, who declared ECOWAS support for a free, fair and violence-free poll in Nigeria, noted that Nigeria is very important to the ECOWAS region.
He added that the country’s safety would guarantee safety and security in ECOWAS, thus the need to ensure that Nigeria continues to be stable. “As you know, Nigeria is a very important member of ECOWAS.
The largest economy, the largest nation in the ECOWAS region and so Nigeria’s safety and security, is the safety and security of the whole of ECOWAS region and so, I stand on behalf of all the Presidents of ECOWAS, and wish that all Nigerians will come out and express their votes and their votes would count towards electing who becomes the next leader of this country.”
He described the election as “critical for Nigeria and that it would reassure the whole world that Nigeria is a democratic nation, which also upholds the rule of law and that the country is committed to tenets of good governance.
“As you are aware, our sub-region this year, has five countries that are going through elections and ECOWAS has been involved in ensuring that this elections are held in a peaceful and transparent environment”.
