ECN set to empower 50 women, youths

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have begun the programme to empower 50 Nigerian women and youths from the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, using Ushafa Pottery Centre as the pilot scheme.
The Director-General of the Commission, Prof. Eli Bala told the Daily Times that the Commission in collaboration with the UNDP and the Social Development Secretariat of the FCTA, chose the Ushafa Pottery Centre, which also hosted the former President of the United States of America, Mr. Bill Clinton, during his state visit to Nigeria based on the fact that the centre already had local expertise and skills as well as facilities for pottery.
Bala also noted that both the UNDP and ECN wanted to harness and enhance the existing capacity to include the fabrication of eco-friendly fuel wood cook stoves, with the participation of private sector for wider jobs creation and economic empowerment of rural women and youths in the country, adding that the Ushafa Potterry Centre would serve as the pilot scheme as the rural women and youths across the length and breadth of the country would benefit from the programme.
