Don’t blame APC over mix up in Board appointment – Oyegun

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun, has said the party is not to be blamed in the mix up in the list of heads and members of Board of Federal parastatals recenty released by the Federal Government.

Oyegun, who spoke to journalists on Saturday in Abuja, also said that the party would deploy its previous achievements to sell it to the electorate in the 2019 general election in the country.

The list of board members released had names of some dead personalities which raised controversies among both politicians and the populace.

Oyegun pointed that the party will be prompt and vigorous in its preparation for the coming election.

He said “As we are resuming office on Monday, 10th January, we are going to hit the ground running. We all know that this year, obviously is going to be an active year of elections”.

Oyegun further disclosed that the preparation would start with the party’s national convention in the first quarter of the year to elect leadership the party deem fit to lead her, after the local government, states and national congresses.

“Our selling point ahead the 2019 election is our achievements so far as a ruling party in various sectors including power, transportation and agriculture.

“I can emphatically say that the polity is settling down; the economy is recovering strongly and clearly out of recession. I can say that in the practical areas that promote development as roads, policy of the party and its implementation are firmly grounded. Power which no nation can develop without is stabilized”, he said.

However, he disclosed that, “There is still room for improvement; I am not saying the problem has been entirely solved. The commitment to the completion of the Mambila Power plant which will contribute a third or half of our needs is a major step forward with the bringing back on steam of projects that had been abandoned in the sector has contributed to raising the generation capacity to what it is today with about 6.000 to 7, 000 mega watts.

“Also, the strengthening of the distribution facilities is on-going so power will continue to grow both in terms of generating capacity and ability to deliver to consumers”, Oyegun said.

He said what the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has succeeded in doing is that it has stabilized situations by process of substantial growth in power generation and distribution.

“It has also started the revolution of developing functional railway transportation that kick start a meaningful industrial development in any nation”.

On the inclusion of dead persons in board appointments, he said: “The List of appointees was prepared since 2015. I think that issue has raised a lot of controversies already, the only thing I want to add is that it is pretty obvious that the party was not involved in the final stages of the compilation.

“Yes, we sent out list at the initial stage about two years ago. We demanded for every state to make 50 nomination which were sent to the committee in charge. They completed the exercise that time but since then, a lot has happened; people died, we have three governors that were not there when the list was compiled, so it was clear that there was obvious need for us to look at the outcome of the exercise but we were not fortunate to participate at the final stage, otherwise, it is quite clear that such mistake would not have occurred. It is my sincere hope that we will be fully involved in the review that has to now take place and any other exercise onward”, he added.
