Donald Trump and his “America First” policy

Under a scheme of interdependence, sharing helps to reduce problems. A country with a sense of sharing reduces poverty in its midst. The same principle applies to communities, societies, age-groups and families. In this critical time we need to share what we have with others. We have many displaced persons in our midst. We have husbands who used to be breadwinners, but are now jobless. Some businesses have collapsed, making people financially distressed. Many people have become sick because of the distressful conditions they have found themselves in life.
During Gowon’s regime, the economy was booming but with no sense of direction. And at that time Nigerians used to travel to London for shopping, and Nigeria’s naira was stronger than the American dollar. The past glories are in conflict with what we are experiencing now. There are crises that even affect marital relationships and family cohesion.
Many homes have broken down because of lack of coping mechanisms. The economic and political crises have shattered many people’s values when they do not know how to re-root themselves in God and rely on him for better condition. Sharing is needed today in families.
Those who are gainfully employed need to understand that no one likes to be poor. When a man who used to be rich loses his job because of economic problems in the country, the other partner should understand that it is not the end of life. In such circumstances, couples need espirit de corps to wait patiently on the Lord.
Many women who have become breadwinners today make their husbands uncomfortable by not respecting them any longer as heads of the family. A woman who can, should help her husband bring his business back to life again. There should be a sense of sharing and belonging. When there is no sharing, there is no progress. Sharing is spiritual. It makes us feel a part of each other. Sharing fosters healthy climate and promotes family cohesion and development. A family that shares is a healthy family. A nation that shares is a healthy nation. In summary, whoever has should be ready to help those who “have not.” In these difficult times, families should have ways of keeping their family economy strong. Don’t give up your husband or wife on your way up. You might need him or her on your way down.
What is happening in Nigeria today needs a reduction of anxiety and coping mechanism to survive, otherwise one dies in vain waiting for the government that will come immediately to solve our numerous problems. We need to build up the economy with the government by working hard because working hard leads to a healthy economy. This is a new kind of realism that will help us recover our economy. The role of rich men or money bags in Nigeria is calling for attention. The rich cannot be happy with their wealth if the nation is plunged into a serious economic depression. Today we have millionaires and billionaires in Nigeria, but their wealth have no worth if they cannot use it to help their nation and the people. Being rich is no longer fashionable, if it cannot be used for human development. Trump’s campaign was against the establishments, Wall Street and the chronic Capitalists that have no eyes to the poor, the peripheries and the neglected Americans and he said, he will establish them when he becomes the President.
Looking at how the Western media see Trump, no one would believe what is on board now, seeing Trump basking in political glory. Trump, who has a main stream politics populism, anti-semantic, anti- Muslim, xenophobic, created home for white supremacy, a member of K.K.K. (Klu Klux Klan).
Most of these traits are found in the people he appointed in his cabinet. With all these negativities around him, he won the election to be an American president. The world received his victory with skeptical smile and some feel America has lost international standard. Many questions are being asked; has democracy lost its ontic values, what about British Empire of the world, Common Wealth of nations. Can one be proud again to answer children of common wealth?
Will the Colonial structures be a thing of the past? The illegal people in America would be victims of Trump’s new social construct, “America First”. Also the new marriage of Trump with Puttin is night-marish, will it not lead to a diminishing return? Is America going to lose in a world stage? The children’s dream of going to America may be a mirage for America may no longer be a free world again. Will Trump and his Political proselytes achieve all these before his tenure ends? Or does his statements or his promises have placebo effect? The guess is ours. One may ask: Is Trump’s cabinet a gerontocratic government or a government without the academia? A little act of human kindness will go a long way. We cannot realize more if we retreat into our own world of isolation, locking our boundaries and looking at the strangers through a magnifying glass.
In the case of Nigeria, we are still battling with primitive accumulation of wealth and aping democracy. The new in politics are not thinking like Trump who says that, he will better his people first but they enter politics to have their larges. They are there to become economic colossus and loose a sense of sharing what they have with their subjects or creating better conditions for everybody. To be rich is to make sacrifices to better the country and its people. The rich nation creates international trade to help the poor countries and help in their development. When this populist sinks into isolationism, the world loses its sense of sharing with the other world. It looks like each country is on its own and democracy is being questioned. Democracy loses its sense of being the government of the people by the people and for the people. Imagine Greece, the home of democracy but a populist ideology has penetrated into it. Who knows the next ideology that will be invoke in future. Will the third world be everlasting victims of these ideologies? There is power and money in these ideologies. He that follows Russian ideology would be accepted in the kingdom of socialism. And he that follows liberal democracy would be accepted in the kingdom of materialism. But in reality, these are not achievable. Sharing in the real sense of it is borrowing and giving as a charity with strings attached is perpetual slavery. The war in Syria has lasted for five or six years with Russia helping them and here there is no win-win situation. President Assad will pay dearly for assistance received from Russia. The deaths incurred will extend to the next generation. One would ask what victory is if not psychological.
