Don calls for curricula restructuring

A Professor of Business Administration and Management, Crawford University, a private university owned by The Apostolic Faith in Igbesa, Ogun State, Prof Patrick Yalokwu, has called for the restructuring of curricula of various institutions from primary education stage through secondary education to tertiary.

According to him, the present curricula do not give Nigerians the expected education and training to develop the country, stressing that many of the curricula were developed over 20 years ago and were more of subject oriented meanwhile the country needs a functional education that will prepare the students for the world of work.

He said this while fielding questions from journalists after delivering the 3rd inaugural lecture of the university titled “Spiritually Minded Authentic Leadership: Catalyst For Sustainable Development at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the University in Igbesa, Ogun State.

The don noted that the curricula should be more of practical rather than theory saying that government is not funding education properly and this is affecting the kind of products being churned out by various institutions.

“Our curricula should be restructured to be more practical oriented so that when people go to schools they acquire skills that will make them employable and even become job creators”, he said.

On other factors hindering the growth of the education sector, Yalokwu said the population should be looked into and that there should be National Population Policy to look into how to control the population

because the available institutions cannot take care of the candidates seeking admission while also bemoaning poor recruitment into organisations as hampering the growth of education.

In his lecture, he suggested that for the country to take a leap towards the much needed socio-economic transformation and technological development, there is the need to harness the competencies of a spiritually-minded authentic leader to mobilize people and resources towards sustainable development.

“Nigeria is a very large country with a very large population but at the same time there are not too many people who are spiritually minded, this lecture talks about authentic leadership which puts God first,

one that will look at what is right for the country and will ask God what He want him to do to lead this country out of the various problems confronting it over the years”, he said.

He said the major constraint to sustainable development is that people are not authentic and consistent in their leadership precepts adding that Nigeria needs a selfless leadership that will develop the whole country and not just his own clan or family alone.
