Discovering Nigeria on a Budget This Christmas

This festive season, steep economic challenges and high domestic flight prices , FX challenges and high international flights,  makes travel seem like a far-off dream. But exploring neighbouring cities using a combination of rail and road is not just budget-friendly—it’s a chance to uncover the gems in our own backyard. This Christmas let’s embrace affordable adventures close to home.

Festive Getaways for Some Regions

While I encourage everyone to explore, I will only recommend destinations I’ve visited and enjoyed personally. These are safe, exciting, and budget-friendly options for the festive season:

• From Lagos and the South: Take a train to Ibadan and then a taxi to Ekiti to visit the Ikogosi Warm Springs. This natural wonder, where warm and cold springs meet, offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. The pounded yam in Ekiti ‘slaps’ differently from anywhere else I’ve seen.
• From the South East and South South: Head to Akwa Ibom and enjoy the beauty of its serene resorts. Known as Nigeria’s most beautiful state, Akwa Ibom is perfect for those seeking tranquillity and great hospitality. There is a reason they call Ibom the home of food!
• From Abuja and the North: Visit neighbouring resorts like Almat Farms, or take a train to Kaduna, then a taxi to Kano to experience Porto Golf Resorts. This luxurious retreat combines relaxation with the rich culture of Kano. For meat lovers, this trip is for you because you’ll be getting three times the size of the suya you”ll buy in Lagos for same price.

If You’re  in Your City

For those who prefer to stay closer to home, don’t be the grinch who stole Christmas! Make the most of the season by stepping out and enjoying the holiday cheer in your city. Here’s how to have a memorable December without traveling far:

1. Explore Christmas Markets: Visit your state’s Christmas markets, as many are vibrant hubs for festive vibes, local crafts, and tasty treats.
2. Dine Festively: Check out restaurants offering special holiday menus and experience the joy of Christmas through food.
3. Detty December Events: Attend concerts, parties, and cultural events happening across your city. It’s a time to unwind, socialize, and embrace the festive spirit.
4. Spread Love: Share kindness with your community in small but meaningful ways. The joy of giving this season always comes back tenfold.
5. Catch Performances: Visit malls and event venues for festive performances, Christmas carols, and other activities.
6. Beach Day Out: Make sure you take on a beach day out with friends are family, with so many beach clubs  to explore in Lagos, I’ll recommend you purchase their day pass tickets -which often allows you access the beach and explore the resorts facilities.
7. Create Magic at Home: Turn decorating your Christmas tree into a family affair with photos, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and homemade gingerbread cookies.

Before you raise concerns about security, let’s be honest—the whole world has its risks. Nigeria is no exception. But fear shouldn’t hold you back from exploring your homeland. Start by discovering the beauty around you before venturing into the wider world.

If you’re traveling, here are three simple tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey:

1. Plan Ahead: Confirm train and taxi schedules, and have a backup plan for transportation.
2. Stay Connected: Share your itinerary with family or friends and carry a fully charged phone and power bank.
3. Be Alert: Avoid traveling at night, and stay vigilant in unfamiliar areas.
