Dino Melaye resigns from PDP, cites leadership failure

Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi West, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and deliver good governance to Nigerians.

In a letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA of Kogi state, Melaye said his resignation takes immediate effect. The letter was shared on Thursday via his official X account.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” he wrote.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi election, said his exit followed a period of “careful reflection” on the state and direction of the party.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he said.

He urged that his resignation be treated as a full withdrawal from all party structures and activities.

“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he added.

Melaye ended the letter by thanking the PDP for the opportunity to serve under its platform.
