Destroying the Second Term Jinx in Oyo Politics
The April 11, gubernatorial election in Oyo State has gone down in history as epochal and a watershed with the breaking of the second term jinx for the first time.
In this development, Senator Abiola Ajimobi who has severally, at different fora, said that no voter would ever vote out a performing governor, and has also put a lie to the assertion that Ibadan people do not serve anybody twice, appears to have been vindicated.
Before him, we have had the likes of Late Chief Bola Ige, Late Chief Kolapo lshola, Late Lamidi Adesina, Senator Rashidi Ladoja and Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala who have all ruled for only one term.
These personalities, however hard some of them tried had never succeeded in occupying the number one seat at the Agodi Government House twice.
In one way or the other, all of them had an affinity with the late strong man of Oyo State politics, Chief Lamidi Adedibu
But Ajimobi was able to read the signs of the times despite political shenanigans by his traducers who, if truth has to be told are really his lbadan cousins apart from Akala.
He is on the better side of history because the electorate are now wiser, more politically sophisticated and are ready to give vent to their desire for change.
The tide of the President – elect’s triumph, whose victory came about through the political sagacity and vision of the APC National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, when even General Buhari had failed thrice to realise his presidential ambition, has become food for thought in Oyo State and nationally.
An interesting recall was Tinubu’s statement to former Governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani at a Governors’ forum in 2002 or thereabouts that” PDP ‘s umbrella don tear.”
This has not only become prophetic as Tinubu not only survived the Obasanjo onslaught while other South West governors failed in their second term bid but has continued to be the game changer in Nigeria politics.
Ajimobi as a key visionary too, saw ahead of time and with his conviction not minding the misapplication of his policies by some of his aides has been able to break the second term jinx
While others who said their ambition is a divine appointment, or that they are the best of the lot have suddenly discovered they were backing the wrong horse.
Ajimobi appears as the man of the moment and it remains to be seen whether his second term is going to be positively maximized for the benefit of the people of Oyo State or for ego-boosting alone.
