Delta assembly raises alarm over herdsmen attacks, insecurity

The Delta state House of Assembly on Wednesday advised Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to speed up measures to address the security challenges in the state following the rising spate of attacks by Fulani herdsmen on various communities in the state.
This resolution was passed following the adoption of the motion sponsored by the lawmaker representing Aniocha North Constituency, Emeka Nwaobi, under matters of urgent public importance.
Nwaobi described the continued attacks by suspected herdsmen as absurd and inimical to the development drive of the Okowa administration and the efforts of the communities experiencing the attacks.
He added that unless proactive measures are taken to ensure the safety of citizens of the state, more atrocities may be carried out by the attackers.
The assembly member regretted that only last week, suspected herdsmen kidnapped two persons in Oboior and three others in other communities in Aniocha North Local Government Area.
The lawmaker advocated for proactive measures by security agencies that will ensure the perpetrators of the deadly attacks are apprehended and prosecuted.
He stated that “as it stands now, no one can freely move without security agents; it’s that bad and we urge Gov. Okowa to speed up measures to protect the lives of our people.
“The menace of these heartless herdsmen is terrifying and it’s high time we move to protect our harmless people”
Majority Leader of the House, Tim Owhefere in his contributions, canvassed that the situation was becoming too unbearable, adding that if urgent steps are not taken, the herdsmen may sack the entire state and condemned the killing of innocent people in various communities across the state.
Lawmakers, who spoke in support of the motion, lamented that nothing tangible has been done to curtail the criminal activities of the herdsmen who they said are also into kidnapping.
Speaker Oborevwori Sherriff in his ruling directed the state government to speed up measures to protect lives and properties in the state.
