Defence Minister Musa seeks comprehensive review of military operations nationwide
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), on Friday assumed duty at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Ship House, Abuja stressing the urgent need for comprehensive review of military operations nationwide, improve troops’ welfare , operational coordination and discipline.
General Musa said he would lead the ministry defence, the military and Defence sector, to confront Nigeria’s security challenges head-on and ensure that “shedding of innocent blood must end.”
The new Defence Minister was received on arrival by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence,Service chiefs, directors, and senior ministry officials.
He said “our troops are out there day and night, risking everything so that Nigerians can sleep in peace. Welfare is not administrative; it is strategic,”
Gen Musa ,the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff who was appointed minister of Defence warned that corruption and professional misconduct would meet stiff sanctions.
“There will be zero tolerance for corruption, indiscipline or indolence. Our loyalty is to Nigeria and the Nigerian people.
“The shedding of innocent blood must end. Our children deserve to return to school. Farmers must return to their farms. Many of these issues require both kinetic and non-kinetic solutions—justice, equity, fairness, and good governance. We will pursue a comprehensive, balanced approach,” the Minister declared.
He also announced a comprehensive review of military operations nationwide.
“We will begin with a rigorous review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations. Data, not conjecture, must guide our decisions,” he warned.
Earlier, while welcoming him, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, described the appointment as timely.
“Your assumption of duty marks a significant moment for the Ministry and for the entire defence sector,” Pheelangwa said.
Similarly, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, pledged the Armed Forces’ support.
“We are glad to have him back and look forward to a more robust and coordinated approach to solving our security challenges,” he said.
